A Qualitative Case Study on Communal Living for Older Adults Living alone in Rural Area
Kim Yu-Jin

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of communal living arrangements for older adults who live alone in rural areas. Using Stake's instrumental and collective case study methods, it intends to investigate the background where the communal living arrangement has started, what and how factors are interrelated with, and how it has worked in such a way. Participant observations in four communal living areas, in-depth interviews with 47 participants, related documents, and visual materials were collected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Four main themes were emerged as follows: 1) older adults' acceptance of communal living arrangements led by the local government, 2) the actual circumstances of communal living arrangements where it is only possible in rural areas, 3) changes on informal caregiving practice and deepening of dependence on the welfare system, 4) its fast expansion, however the concern for its existence and future is getting started.
